The Association of California Life and Health Insurance Companies (ACLHIC) is the largest life and health insurance trade association in California. Our organization is dedicated to advocating key insurance issues before legislative and administrative bodies, including life, annuity, health, privacy, long-term care, community reinvestment, litigation, solvency, taxation, risk classification, regulation, and insurance organization and regulation.

Our Story

ACLHIC was founded in 1962 by Occidental, Pacific Mutual, and Cal-West life insurance companies. Initially established as the Association of California Life Insurance Companies (ACLIC), we began as a small organization in Oakland, California. Under the leadership of our first executive vice president, Lewis Keller, we quickly grew and became a powerful force in shaping the insurance industry's role in California.

Throughout our history, we have been committed to highlighting the economic and social contributions of the insurance industry to the state of California. One of our earliest studies, commissioned by Mr. Keller, is still widely referenced and regularly updated today. As the state legislature transitioned to a full-time institution in 1966, we relocated to Sacramento, paving the way for further growth and expansion.

Member Benefits and Services

As the largest life and health insurance trade association in California, we offer a range of benefits and services to our members. Our company members gain a representative on our Board of Directors and are placed in a rotation to serve on our Executive Committee. They also receive regular updates on California legislative and regulatory issues affecting life and health insurance companies.

Our members have the opportunity to serve on issues committees and attend our exclusive ACLHIC Round Table, an annual gathering of company members, industry experts, public officials, and legislative staff. Company member dues are calculated based on prior calendar year premiums, and we offer a 50% discount on first-year dues.

We also offer associate membership to law firms that do business with our company members, as well as to other statewide trade associations related to life or health insurance. Associate members enjoy preferred vendor status with us, up-to-the-minute updates on California legislative and regulatory issues affecting life and health insurance companies, and exclusive access to our ACLHIC Round Table.
