Protecting Illinois policyholders when they need it most
The Illinois Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing protection to Illinois residents whose insurance companies have failed. Our association was established in 1980 by the Illinois General Assembly to ensure that Illinois residents receive certain protections in the event of an insurance company insolvency.
Our History
The Illinois Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association was created to provide a safety net for Illinois residents who may be impacted by an insurance company's insolvency. We were established to ensure that policyholders receive the benefits they have paid for, even if their insurance company is no longer able to fulfill its obligations.
What We Do
As a guaranty association, our primary function is to provide protection to Illinois residents whose insurance companies become insolvent. We achieve this by paying claims, continuing policy coverage, transferring policies to another insurance company, or taking other authorized actions. Our goal is to minimize the financial impact of an insurance company's insolvency on policyholders.
Policyholder Protection
As a policyholder, it's essential to understand the protections available to you in the event of an insurance company's insolvency. The Illinois Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association provides protection for Illinois residents who own life, health, or annuity policies. Our basic protections for policyholders of a member insurer that is found to be insolvent include:
- Up to $300,000 in death benefits for life insurance policies
- Up to $100,000 in cash surrender or withdrawal values for life insurance policies
- Up to $500,000 in health benefit plan benefits
- Up to $300,000 in disability insurance benefits
- Up to $300,000 in long-term care insurance benefits
- Up to $100,000 in other types of health insurance benefits
- Up to $250,000 in withdrawal and cash values for annuities
